SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team made a statement in their season opener rolling past UC Santa Cruz 83-63.
The Purple & Gold who have six new faces used a 24-2 run that stretched the final seven minutes of the 3rd Quarter as they led 66-46. During the frame Whittier was 10-of-15 from the floor, which included a 4-for-5 effort from deep led by Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) who poured in 10 of her game high 28 points.
The game featured 13 ties, nine of which came in the first 22 minutes of the game. There were also nine lead changes.
Along with her 28 points, Cubel added two rebounds, five assists and two steals. Teani White (Burbank, Calif.) added 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting with four assists and a game high five picks. Daisy Cardenas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) led the long-range shooting finishing with 12 points, going 4-for-6 from deep with five boards. Emily Guerena (Montebello, Calif.) came off the bench and played 20 minutes adding 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Whittier trailed by two 16-14 after the 1st Quarter, but came back to outscore the Banana Slugs 23-21 across the next 10:00 minutes to take the game into a tie at intermission. The difference in the game was the 3rd Quarter where WC held a 29-9 margin that stretched the lead to double digits. UCSC attempted a comeback in the 4th but couldn't make a dent as Whittier would add another 17 points.
Whittier shot 49% from the field on the game and 67% from three-point territory. They outrebounded the Banana Slugs 43-36, added 28 points inside the paint, and forced 22 UCSC turnovers, turning them into 23 points.
Whittier has their home opener this Saturday, November 16 when they take on the University of Antelope Valley beginning at 4:00pm.
