WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second time this season the Whittier College Baseball team has played four games in three days. Sunday afternoon they took out the University of Dallas 9-5 that ended a three-game losing skid.
The Purple & Gold who were coming in dropping a three game series with Occidental College was in need of a win and they got it collecting nine runs on 10 hits. They improve to 4-11, 0-6 SCIAC.
The Crusaders opened things up with four runs over the first three and a half innings. The Poets finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th converting on a pair of miscues from Dallas, capped off with a Brandon Lara-Mack (San Gabriel, Calif.) groundout on the infield, which plated Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.).
In the 5th, the Poets would open things up bringing across five runs on five hits, while using another two errors by the Crusaders. Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) started off the inning with a bunt single and then moved up following a Justin Ryan (Riverside, Calif.) single through the right side. Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) then stepped in with a single to right that brought in the first and after that the flood gates opened with Bauer and Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif.) both reaching on errors, Jared Vuz (Blairstown, NJ) doubling down the right field line and Lara-Mack singling up the middle.
This put WC on top 6-4 and they didn't look back. Dallas got within one in the 6th, but a wild pitch in the bottom half would allow Alexander Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.) to come in and score stretching the deficit back to two. In the top half of the 8th Dallas threatened again with back to back singles, but a 6-4-3 double play would end the threat. In the Poet half they were able to add insurance with a pair of runs on three hits. Samsing ripped one to left for a double and then moved to third with a Jelloian single through the right side. Following a double steal that allowed Samsing to come in, Ryan came up clutch with a single up the middle that moved the score to 9-5.
Then in the 9th Alex Escobar (Brea, Calif.) was called on to close and he did just that. After a single to right center from Martinez would settle down to induce a grounder and two flyouts.
Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) who came in relief earned the win as he improves to 1-3. He threw 4.2 Innings giving up two runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts. Escobar recorded his first save throwing the final inning perfect.
Ryan finished the day 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Jelloian was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Samsing was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Whittier is geared up, weather permitting for a non-conference game with Rochester (NY) tomorrow, Tuesday, March 10 beginning at 3:00pm.
